But what is heatstroke? And is there any ways we can prevent it especially those who are working in the field or exposed to the sunlight such as construction workers.
Hyperthermia, in its complex state referred to as heat stroke or sunstroke, is a severe condition which occurs when the body produces or absorbs more heat than it can disperse. It is usually caused by too much exposure to heat or high temperatures. The heat-regulating mechanisms of the body eventually become overwhelmed and unable to effectively deal with the heat, causing the body temperature to rise uncontrollably. Hyperthermia is a medical emergency which requires immediate treatment.
Common symptoms and signs of heat stroke:
1. high body temperature
2. Non- sweating, but with hot red or flushed dry skin
3. Fast pulse
4. Trouble breathing
5. Extraordinary behavior
6. Hallucinations
7. Confusion
8. disturbance
9. Disorientation
10. Seizure
11. Unconsciousness
How do you treat a heat stroke victim?
* Move the victim to a shady area, remove clothing, apply cool or lukewarm water to the skin such as spraying the victim with cool water from garden hose, fan the victim to promote sweating and evaporation, and place ice packs under armpits and groins.
* Monitor body temperature and continue cooling efforts until the body temperature falls to 101-102°F (38.3-38.8°C).
* Always notify emergency services immediately. If their arrival is delayed, they can give you further instructions for treatment of the victim.
How can heat stroke be prevented?
* Avoid becoming dehydrated and to avoid strong physical activities in hot and humid weather.
* If you have to do physical activities in hot weather, drink plenty of liquids (such as water and sports drinks), but avoid alcohol, caffeine, and tea which may lead to dehydration.
* Your body will need replacement of electrolytes (such as sodium) as well as fluids if you sweat excessively or perform strong activity in the sunlight for prolonged periods.
* Take frequent breaks to hydrate yourself. Wear hats and light-colored, lightweight, loose clothes.
